Introduction to Flat/Broad Nib Calligraphy – Session 1

Are you wondering how to write elegantly with your fountain pen? Looking for pointers to turn your rainbow of inks into lovely calligraphic letters? Let a professional calligrapher guide you with tips and materials that will enable you to write more beautifully. Each three hour class will introduce italic and uncial alphabets along with practical information to expand your lettering skills for small projects. Enjoy these lettering fundamentals:

   • Learn correct ergonomic hand and body positions.
   • Understand pen angle, letter and line spacing and how to use guide lines.
   • Calculate the correct letter size using a nib width ladder.
   • Glean tips for addressing envelopes (evenly spaced & straight, or free & creative).
   • Design simple broad nib borders for poems or place cards Implement creative ideas with ink such as blending colors as you write.
   • Write italic and uncial ABCs, with guided correction as you practice.

Supplies:

   • Please bring your own broad nib pens and ink, plus your favorite lined and blank writing papers for practice, with a pencil, eraser and ruler.
   • An assortment of fountain and dip pens in large sizes will be available for students to use during class.
   • All other materials will be supplied

   • Exemplar handouts showing how to write italic and uncial alphabets

   • Practice sheets for pen angle and letter slant
   • Plastic envelope addressing guide lines insert
   • List of calligraphy resources
   • Your name written artistically by the instructor

Audience: This class is designed for adults and mature adolescents (generally age 12 and up.)

    At Washington University Carol’s graphic design professor directed her to a career in lettering. She was preparing to be an art teacher. Her calligraphy business grew out of designing her own wedding stationery, and has expanded ever since. Teaching lettering skills combined with creating calligraphic art became the career she enjoys.
