Introduction to Calligraphy and Illumination

Are you curious about calligraphy, or about traditional decorated letters in manuscripts? Now you can get a sneak peek at how they’re done!

Have you always wanted to know more about calligraphy, but perhaps you’re not quite ready for the commitment of signing up for a multi-week class with homework? Or maybe you’re just getting started in your calligraphy studies, or you’re ready to get started but not sure what class to take? Perhaps you have admired those old illuminated manuscripts and wondered how they were created? Then this class, which could have been called “Art Appreciation for Calligraphy,” is perfect for you!

This class will give you a taste of what is involved in the practice and study of calligraphy. While this class does not teach students to write in a calligraphy style (that usually takes a bit more time to do effectively), it offers a short demonstration/display of a variety of different calligraphy styles, techniques, and tools, along with a brief history of calligraphy. As a bonus, you get the opportunity to follow step-by-step instructions/demonstration to create your VERY OWN fancy decorated letter during the class!

This class will at least give you an understanding of the depth and breadth of what is involved in creating beautiful letters. If you choose, it will also show you how to create more decorated letters in the future, and will serve as a starting point for further studies in calligraphy and related decoration.

This will be a small interactive in-person class, so each student can have their questions answered and get individual feedback and assistance in class as needed.
